Strategic Transportation Performance

The purpose of a statewide transportation strategy, as envisioned in Georgia's Statewide Strategic Transportation Plan, is to promote economic growth through access to jobs. It is a proactive approach to securing future prosperity that is outcomes-driven and return-on-investment oriented.

There are three primary ways in which GRTA influences the State of Georgia's setting of strategic transportation direction and the measurement of transportation performance outcomes:

     1. Monitoring the performance of the region's existing transportation system to evaluate its progress towards meeting the state's transportation vision laid out in the Statewide Strategic Transportation Plan (SSTP). GRTA assists the Georgia Department of Transportation by evaluating the transportation plans throughout the state against the goals set in the SSTP, tracking the execution of the plans, measuring the performance of the resulting transportation system, and reporting the results to the Governor, General Assembly, and citizens of Georgia.

     2. Approving the short-range, federally-mandated Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the Atlanta region on behalf of the Governor. GRTA works through this process to ensure that the transportation investments identified in the plan align with the state's strategic transportation goals and objectives.

     3. Reviewing and approving all Developments of Regional Impact within its 13-county metro Atlanta jurisdiction. Per state law, GRTA's purpose is to evaluate a proposed development's effect on the surrounding transportation infrastructure (local roads, state highways and interstates) and to identify and direct the mitigation of any current and future adverse impacts to mobility on the transportation system.

In the past few years, Georgia has taken significant steps to revolutionize the way it plans, finances, and delivers transportation investments throughout the state.
